Installing the Starter Strip
Installing the Starter Strip: A Crucial Step for Vinyl Siding Installation
Step 1: Preparing the Home
Before installing the starter strip, the home must be prepared. This includes:
- Removing any loose paint or debris from the exterior walls.
- Inspecting the foundation and walls for any damage that may need to be repaired.
- Marking the location of the starter strip around the perimeter of the house using a chalk line.
Step 2: Positioning the Starter Strip
The starter strip should be positioned along the chalk line marked in Step 1. It should be installed level and straight using a level and chalk line. The starter strip is typically made of aluminum or vinyl and provides a base for the siding panels to rest on.
Step 3: Securing the Starter Strip
The starter strip is secured to the exterior wall using nails or screws. It should be spaced evenly, typically 12-18 inches apart. It is crucial to ensure that the nails or screws penetrate the sheathing behind the siding to provide a solid hold.
Step 4: Overlapping and Sealing
When installing the starter strip around corners, it should be overlapped by a minimum of 6 inches. This overlap helps prevent water infiltration and ensures a tight seal. Additionally, the joints between the starter strip sections can be sealed with caulk or sealant to further enhance weather resistance.
